On Saturday at Mayol, Fabien Brau-Boirie left the pitch limping, having hurt his left knee. A few hours earlier, in Vannes, Sacha Lotrian was carried off on a stretcher. On Sunday at Deflandre, Antoine Hastoy could no longer put his foot on the ground. Round 7 added at least twelve injuries to a treatment room that was already full.

“When we see him go off limping, it worries everyone,” Sébastien Piqueronies admitted after Pau’s defeat at Toulon (41-20), in comments reported by Rugbyrama. The next day, Ronan O’Gara made no attempt to reassure anyone after La Rochelle’s defeat to the UBB (19-25). “I think he’s torn the ligaments in his ankle. It’s catastrophic for us,” the La Rochelle manager told Rugbyrama of his fly-half, before adding: “On top of that, I think Matthias Haddad has done the same thing.”

One player in five

As of Wednesday 28 October, 142 players across the fourteen Top 14 squads are unavailable through injury, one in five. The count, compiled from clubs’ medical updates, staff announcements and our own team sheets, mixes weekend injuries with players who have not featured for months. Jonathan Danty (La Rochelle) has had a knee problem since October 2025, and Jean-Luc du Preez (UBB) has not played a match since 18 January.

The knee tops the list, with 19 injured players. The shoulder follows, with 18, then the ankle, 17, and concussion, the thigh and the back, 10 each. Several of these injuries will cost a whole season: Bruce Devaux (USAP), Léo Carbonneau (Racing 92) and Alexandre Etchebehere (Pau) have torn their cruciate ligaments, Thibaud Flament (Stade Toulousain), who underwent shoulder surgery, will not return before 2027, and Sacha Lotrian (Clermont) had surgery in Vannes for a tibia-fibula fracture. LOU prop Thomas Gallo, operated on for a dislocated wrist, will be out for at least six months.

Nine months for a knee, twelve days for a concussion

This picture matches the known profile of professional rugby. In England, the Premiership’s injury surveillance programme placed concussion top of the list of match injuries for the twelfth consecutive season in 2022-2023, and named the tackle as the leading cause of injury. Hamstring injuries are the most frequent in training there, 13% of cases, and in matches, the second most costly in days missed.

Cruciate ligament tears cost the most time. A study of 125 professional rugby players who underwent knee surgery shows that 92% returned to top level, on average 9.6 months after the operation. That is the timeline facing Bruce Devaux, Léo Carbonneau, Alexandre Etchebehere and Clément Vergé (Stade Toulousain), operated on on 7 September. The Achilles tendon, which has sidelined nine players, is no kinder: among elite players tracked between 2013 and 2025, 80.8% played again, after a median of 8.5 months.

For concussions, the Top 14 applies the World Rugby protocol, written into the LNR’s medical regulations. After the pitch-side test, followed by the post-match test, a neurologist or neurosurgeon appointed by the FFR and the LNR examines the player between 36 and 72 hours later. If a concussion is confirmed, the return to play follows the World Rugby rules in force since July 2022: a player showing clear symptoms, or who has already suffered a concussion in the previous three months or three times in a year, is stood down for at least twelve days, and no return is possible before the seventh day, on the advice of an independent doctor. Murray Taulagi (Vannes), on his third concussion in five months, falls under this rule. Conversely, a player taken off as a precaution who passes the tests carried out after the match and then 36 hours later is not considered concussed: that is what Toulon were hoping for with Baptiste Serin, who went off against Pau without having taken a blow to the head according to his coach, before the concussion was confirmed.

Muscle injuries heal faster, but recur. Matthieu Jalibert injured his quadriceps again in training on 16 October, Thomas Ramos hurt his thigh in mid-October, and Sam Tuifua (La Rochelle) suffered a repeat thigh injury against Toulouse on 6 September. The weekend added two more hamstring injuries alone, Marko Gazzotti and Romain Buros, at La Rochelle, the latter during the warm-up. Two other scares caused less damage: Joel Merkler (Stade Toulousain), ruled out against Perpignan, has sciatic pain and has resumed running, and Sipili Falatea, whose back locked up in the warm-up, has returned to Marcoussis.

At Toulouse, “two or three players a match”

Stade Toulousain have 16 players injured, including all three of their specialist locks, Emmanuel Meafou, Thibaud Flament and Clément Vergé, all of whom have had surgery. Ugo Mola sounded the alarm on 16 October, in a press conference, two days before facing Exeter in the Champions Cup. “This carnage pains me. We’re losing two or three players a match on average. It’s entirely linked to the shape of our rugby,” the Toulouse manager said, in comments reported by Actu Toulouse.

The same day, Antoine Dupont described the spiral from the inside: “With the injuries, you see players forced to play every single match. There comes a point in the season where, if it’s not injury, it’s a dip in form that’s going to hold the player back. At some point, we’re not machines either.” The scrum-half does not see the trend reversing: “I don’t think effective playing time is about to go down, or that players are going to get less strong and less fast.”

On Saturday, after the win over Perpignan, Matthis Lebel summed up the squad’s mood: “We’re hoping it stops one day,” the winger said, quoted by La Dépêche du Midi.

The race for medical jokers

Short of bodies, clubs are recruiting. Toulouse had found a medical joker at lock in New Zealander Jimmy Tupou, before he failed his medical on 23 October. Clermont have signed Rob Leota, a free agent since leaving Bayonne. Vannes have brought in tighthead prop Jeffery Toomaga-Allen to cover for the injury to Sione Mafileo, then Argentine fly-half Nicolás Roger. La Rochelle have recruited New Zealand back Tevita Ofa, and USAP have announced they are looking for replacements for Bruce Devaux and Joaquín Oviedo.

A quarter of last year’s starters

These absences are not confined to the fringes of squads. Last season, 44 of the injured players were among the fifteen most-started players at their club, Vannes, in Pro D2 last year, aside. They had amassed 708 starts, 171 tries and 1,553 points in the league, close to a quarter of these key players’ starts and points.

Player Club Starts 2025-26 Points 2025-26
Léo Carbonneau Racing 92 24 41
Gabriel Ngandebe Montpellier 24 40
Antoine Hastoy La Rochelle 21 123
Domingo Miotti Montpellier 21 265
Thomas Ceyte Clermont 20 5
Sam Simmonds LOU 20 30

Montpellier have eight, Stade Toulousain six. At Montpellier, Domingo Miotti had scored 265 points last season. Léo Carbonneau was Racing 92’s most-started player, Boris Palu the UBB’s.

Eighteen Bleus in the treatment room

France’s national team are paying the price. Of the 63 players used by Fabien Galthié across the eleven matches of the 2025-2026 international season, from the November tests to the July tour, eighteen are injured. Four of the 42 players called up for the Nations Championship pulled out on Monday at Marcoussis: Karl Sorin, Fabien Brau-Boirie, Antoine Hastoy and Marko Gazzotti. Thomas Laclayat, Nicolas Depoortere and Anthony Jelonch are among the players called up to replace them.

“I’m not sure it’s a very deep injury, but it could keep him out,” Aurélien Cologni, the UBB’s defence coach, admitted on Sunday evening about Gazzotti, quoted by RMC Sport. Tighthead prop is the hardest-hit position: all three players who have started there over the past year, Dorian Aldegheri, Régis Montagne and Demba Bamba, are injured, as is Karl Sorin, called up for November.

Protection without obligation

The governing bodies have started to move. For the 2026-2027 season, the FFR and the LNR are trialling a scheme covering 33 internationals: each must be given a weekend off per block of four, or two weekends off in eight, and cannot play more than nine of the season’s twelve international fixtures. The list has never been made public, and the scheme carries no obligation. “There’s no requirement, nobody will be sanctioned for not resting a player after four matches. But it has to be justified,” the Federation explained to RMC Sport in September.

At the same time, the League is trying to speed up the game. This season it has gone back to eight replacements, cut the time allowed for kickers to 45 seconds, from 60 before, and requires lineouts to be thrown within 30 seconds.

Les Bleus host Fiji on 7 November in Lyon, and the Top 14 resumes next weekend with round 8. Fabien Brau-Boirie, who has a kneecap injury, will have surgery next week and is expected to miss around four months, according to L’Équipe.
