A protection scheme only works if it actually restricts something. Put the league, European competition and international duty end to end and you see where the real workload lay: Thomas Ramos played the equivalent of twenty-six full matches, and Emmanuel Meafou had already reached the cap on Test appearances that the measure introduces.
What the scheme says
The FFR (French Rugby Federation) and the LNR (the body that runs French professional rugby) have drawn up a list of 33 internationals whose workload will be managed during the 2026-27 season. Each must get one weekend without a match in every block of four weekends, or two weekends off in a block of eight. In return, none of them can play more than nine of the season’s twelve Tests.
The governing bodies have not published the list. It was revealed by Midi Olympique and picked up by Rugbyrama. It covers nine of the fourteen Top 14 clubs: thirteen players at Stade Toulousain, six at Union Bordeaux-Bègles, three at La Rochelle, three at Pau, three at Toulon, two at Racing 92, one at Clermont, one at LOU and one at Montpellier.
That leaves five clubs with nobody to protect: Bayonne, Castres, Stade Français, USAP and Vannes.
Their 2025-26 season, minute by minute
The table below adds up the three competitions of the past season: the Top 14, including the knockout stage, the Champions Cup, and France’s eleven matches between the November 2025 Tests and the 2026 summer tour.

A quarter of game time on international duty
The thirteen clocked up 17,360 minutes, including 9,625 in the Top 14, 3,384 in the Champions Cup and 4,351 with France. International duty therefore accounts for 25.1% of their total game time.
The proportion varies widely. Anthony Jelonch spent a third of his season in a France shirt, Julien Marchand 32%, Thomas Ramos 31%. At the other end, Cyril Baille did not play a single international minute, and Pierre-Louis Barassi and Rodrigue Neti both stayed below 20%.
Thomas Ramos and Dorian Aldegheri were named in twenty-nine matchday squads, Thibaud Flament and Emmanuel Meafou in twenty-eight. At the other extreme, François Cros and Cyril Baille have seventeen each.
The Test cap limit had already been reached
The measure prevents a protected player from exceeding nine of the season’s twelve Tests. Of the eleven matches France played between November 2025 and July 2026, Emmanuel Meafou played nine. No other Toulouse player on the list went beyond eight.
So the cap takes away nothing from anyone, or next to nothing. It puts in writing what the head coach was already doing.
At club level, the Top 14 is not the only arena
Stade Toulousain played thirty-four matches last season, twenty-eight in the Top 14 and six in the Champions Cup. The most used of the thirteen protected players, Dorian Aldegheri and Thibaud Flament, played twenty-two.
The mandatory rest in blocks of four weekends will apply to both competitions at once, since European weekends count towards the blocks. That is where the restriction will bite, not on the number of Tests.
The thirteen accounted for 28.7% of the Toulouse squad’s Top 14 minutes, 9,625 out of 33,595.
Ten players in their thirties at the start of the World Cup
Antoine Dupont, Romain Ntamack, Thomas Ramos, Pierre-Louis Barassi, Thibaud Flament, Emmanuel Meafou, Peato Mauvaka, Julien Marchand, François Cros, Anthony Jelonch, Dorian Aldegheri, Rodrigue Neti and Cyril Baille.
On 1 September 2027, ten of them will be thirty or older. Dorian Aldegheri will be 34, Cyril Baille also 34, François Cros 33, Julien Marchand and Rodrigue Neti 32, Thomas Ramos 32. Only Romain Ntamack (28), Emmanuel Meafou (29) and Pierre-Louis Barassi (29) will still be in their twenties. The group’s average age will be 31.4.
A list drawn up in January
The selections were locked in as early as January 2026, before the Six Nations, then passed to the steering committee in April. The pecking order has shifted since. Maxime Lucu, France captain during the Nations Championship and a starter in all three summer Tests, is not on the list. Nor are Grégory Alldritt and Hugo Auradou.
Both men reminded the national set-up of their existence this weekend. Hugo Auradou scored twice in Pau’s 70-28 win over Bayonne. Maxime Lucu came on in the 46th minute at Ernest-Wallon and added the extras to UBB’s only converted try.
Racing 92’s two protected players, Romain Taofifenua and Ugo Seunes, play for the club sitting on zero points after two rounds.
