Red Bull are moving into English professional rugby. The energy drink brand, already involved in other sports such as football (RB Salzburg, RB Leipzig, RB New York) and Formula 1, has decided to take over the Newcastle club. An institution well known in England for having brought through, among others, the former England great Jonny Wilkinson, but one that is struggling in the Premiership, where it has finished bottom without fail for three seasons.
Ambition returning for Newcastle?
The change of ownership will have no immediate consequence on the sporting side, since the Falcons’ current director of rugby Steve Diamond has been confirmed in his post, just as Kingspan Park has been confirmed as the professional team’s stadium.
“We are pleased to have acquired Newcastle Red Bull and we are looking to the future to take it to its full potential”, said Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull’s chief executive for projects and investments. A takeover that could allow the club in the north of England, whose last Premiership title dates back to 1998, to rediscover some ambition in their league and on the European stage.
