Pro D2 resumes on Thursday. The question is what being favourite is really worth in this league.
Pro D2 resumes on Thursday, and Provence Rugby arrive with a label they have never worn before. In Midi Olympique’s pre-season poll, fourteen of the division’s sixteen coaches named them as future champions. That is a rare show of consensus in an exercise where votes are usually spread across three or four names.
The question is what being favourite is really worth in this league. Our records give a fairly blunt answer.
The best regular-season side goes up once in three
Since 2012, we have compared, season by season, the club that finished top of the regular season with the one that actually went up after the knockout stage.

The four successes were Vannes in 2025-2026, Oyonnax in 2022-2023, and USAP in 2020-2021 and 2017-2018. Every other time, the best team over thirty rounds left promotion to someone else.
Provence Rugby know the script by heart: in 2023-2024, they finished top of the regular season and went out in the play-off, by a single point, against Grenoble.
Four years of climbing one step a year
What makes the case for the Aix-en-Provence club is something other than one season’s table. It is steady progress, one extra round every spring.

Last spring sums up the journey: 39-21 against Brive in the play-off, an away win at Colomiers in the semi-final (36-28), and a final lost by four points to Vannes, 18-14.
Note that their best record of the period, twenty wins and two draws in 2023-2024, is also the campaign that ended earliest. Over the period, Provence’s attack went from 670 points in 2021-2022 to 905 last season, with 726 conceded.
What the label really changes
The club has the biggest budget in the division this season, and president Denis Philipon no longer hides it: the goal is promotion.
The Midi Olympique poll got it right last year, making Vannes favourites with nine votes out of sixteen. But Vannes are precisely one of the four exceptions: they finished top and went up. Over the decade, the opposite is the rule.
Provence have spent four years learning how to handle the knockout stage. That is where their status will be decided, not in the March standings.
