The third Test of the series between South Africa and New Zealand cost each side a starter, and not just any starter. One match remains, on Saturday 12 September in Baltimore.

Kolbe played all three Tests without scoring

Cheslin Kolbe has a broken jaw. Rassie Erasmus confirmed it after the Springboks’ 29-24 win over the All Blacks on Saturday 5 September at the FNB Stadium in Soweto. The wing, moved to full-back for the occasion, left the pitch within the first ten minutes after a tackle inside his own 22. He will not travel to the United States.

Kolbe has 54 caps and 23 tries for South Africa. He played all three Tests of this series without scoring once, having scored five in nine World Cup matches and eight in nineteen Rugby Championship games.

Savea, two tries then the shoulder

Ardie Savea has been ruled out with immediate effect. The All Blacks captain hurt his shoulder when Jasper Wiese cleared him out of a ruck on the half-hour, Dave Rennie explained. He had already scored two tries, his team’s only ones along with Will Jordan’s.

Savea is on 114 caps and 36 tries, an unusual total for a back rower. Three of those tries came in this series alone, in three matches.

Centre Quinn Tupaea also went off injured in Soweto. These absences add to those of Caleb Clarke, George Bell, Anton Segner and Billy Proctor, lost earlier on the tour.

What is left to play

South Africa lead two wins to one and can no longer lose the series: at best, New Zealand will draw it. The fourth and final Test is played on Saturday 12 September at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
