Who would have bet on him twelve months ago? Not his own manager. Held back by injuries, Domingo Miotti had played only five matches in his first season at Montpellier, to the point of being written off as a recruitment mistake. A year later, the 30-year-old Argentine fly-half is about to play the Top 14 final against Toulouse, on Saturday at the Stade de France, as one of the championship’s leading kickers.

“I had buried him”

The most cutting verdict comes from his own coach. “I didn’t think that player was going to have a season like this. Last year, I had zero confidence in him. I told him so after the semi-final. Sometimes you have to say when you’ve got it wrong,” admitted Joan Caudullo. And he drove the point home: “He made me understand that he wasn’t dead when I had buried him. Today, he’s our best 10.”

Signed from Oyonnax in the summer of 2024, after a spell at Glasgow, Miotti saw his first season in the Hérault turn into a nightmare: a stubborn knee, then the calf, then the thigh. “The worst season of my life,” the player admitted. Five matches, and an uncertain future.

Third-highest points scorer in the Top 14

His 257 points have come in 22 matches (20 starts, 1,423 minutes): 44 penalties, 55 conversions and 3 tries. Including Europe, where Montpellier lifted the Challenge Cup, he climbs to 284 points in 27 games. All of it at better than 85% success off the tee.

The man for the big occasions

It is in the knockout matches that he has weighed in. In April, a last-second penalty crucified UBB at Chaban-Delmas. In the semi-final against Stade Français, he launched Montpellier’s only try and landed seventeen points with a 100% record off the tee. Montpellier, for their part, have not lost since 31 January: thirteen wins in a row.

And now, the final

At half-back he links up again with Scotland scrum-half Ali Price, a former team-mate at Glasgow. The target: a first Bouclier de Brennus. A sign of his return to the front rank, Miotti is one of the Argentines, along with Justo Piccardo, that Felipe Contepomi was unable to call up for Argentina’s opening fixture in the Nations Championship. The Top 14 final came first.
