French amateur rugby is in shock. On Sunday 22 February, at Sévérac-d’Aveyron, a régional 2 fixture turned to tragedy. Following a tackle, Noah, a 23-year-old player, was violently struck on the temple by an opponent. An act of extreme seriousness, committed outside the framework of the game, which immediately plunged the match into horror, the local press reports, including Midi-Libre and Centre presse Aveyron.

The victim collapsed, unconscious. Emergency services intervened very quickly to take charge of the player, who was rushed to the university hospital in Toulouse. The diagnosis is a heavy one: cerebral haemorrhage, a depressed skull fracture, immediate surgery. His condition is considered very worrying, and his life remains in danger.

On the pitch, witnesses describe an unreal scene. Again according to the information relayed by our colleagues, the match stopped dead, the stunned players giving way to worry and incomprehension. Within seconds, the competitive spirit had disappeared, replaced by collective disbelief.

An assault outside the framework of rugby

According to the first findings, the blow was reportedly struck after a passage of play, with no direct connection to the action under way. The alleged perpetrator, a 20-year-old player from the opposing team, was arrested and then held in custody “for acts of deliberate violence causing incapacity of more than eight days within a sports venue“, but the development of the victim’s state of health is “major for the legal classification of the facts“.

“Tests for the presence of narcotics are negative on the man held in custody“, the Rodez public prosecutor’s office stressed, even as sources on the ground stated that the player had tested positive for cocaine, according to information from Le Parisien.

“When we had to call the helicopter, we knew it was very serious. The lad was taken away and what comes next frightens us. He is seriously injured. At one in the morning we were still in contact with his family in Toulouse for news of him. He had been operated on, but he was still in a coma“, Joël Agullon, the president of Sévérac-le-Château, told Midi Libre. 

A judicial investigation is under way to establish precisely the circumstances and the responsibilities. On the sporting side, disciplinary proceedings were launched immediately. The sanctions could be exemplary, matching the violence of the incident. On Monday 23 February, the Fédération Française de Rugby announced its intention to “join the current judicial proceedings as a civil party” and “firmly condemned the senseless and unacceptable act committed during this match“. The Occitanie league, for its part, has convened a crisis meeting.

French rugby gripped by emotion

The news spread rapidly across the whole country, prompting a wave of emotion far beyond the club directly concerned. In amateur rugby, where players are above all enthusiasts, volunteers and members registered for the love of the game, such a tragedy remains exceptional.

Because rugby has historically rested on a bedrock of strong values: respect, solidarity, self-control. Violence in it is codified, regulated, built into the game, but never gratuitous, never out of context. What happened at Sévérac-d’Aveyron is a brutal break with that DNA.

An incident of such extreme gravity obviously raises questions for the whole of amateur rugby. About the management of behaviour, about prevention, about the role of clubs and governing bodies. But also about individual responsibility, in a sport where physical commitment demands, more than ever, clear-headedness and control.
