The images made an impression. At the end of Argentina v England (24-31), the Pumas’ last Nations Championship match, Tomas Albornoz had to be held back by team-mates after confronting referee Angus Gardner. The cause: a try disallowed for Argentina in the closing moments by the Australian, when the score could have given Felipe Contepomi’s side an unlikely draw.

The incident did not go unnoticed. The fly-half, who joined Toulon this summer from Benetton Treviso, has been cited by World Rugby’s disciplinary committee. At this stage no sanction has been imposed: the Argentine will have to explain himself to the governing body, which will decide what follows. A case to watch closely on the Rade, a few weeks out from the season opener.
