The news was confirmed on Wednesday evening by Massy: the match scheduled for Friday in the Essonne will not take place. Stado Tarbes Pyrénées Rugby have given notice that they are forfeiting this round 20 away fixture, marking a critical stage before an insolvency filing described as imminent.

Materially unable to make the trip

According to matching sources, the club no longer has the resources to fund the journey to the Essonne. The forfeit follows an unsuccessful meeting between the players and the board on Tuesday, at which no guarantees were given regarding payment of outstanding wages. The Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR) recorded the decision after receiving an email from the general secretary of the Tarbes association.

Funding the sport in question: the television revenue dead end

This latest crash, after those of Blagnac and Hyères-Carqueiranne, raises a brutal question about the viability of the current model: how do you fund professionalism without television money? Nationale imposes the same operating constraints as Pro D2 (social charges, infrastructure, professional contracts) but without offering the structural revenue that goes with them.

The verdict is damning, because TV rights, the financial lungs of the top two divisions, simply do not exist here. Nationale clubs find themselves trapped in an economic no-man’s-land, dependent solely on local patronage and increasingly fragile public subsidies.

 The Tarbes case forces the question: can French rugby carry on demanding elite standards from clubs whose income rests on an all-but-amateur model? Without a deep reform of how the wealth is shared, grassroots rugby risks becoming a graveyard of historic strongholds.

Uncertainty over the rest of the season 

The fixture list for the coming rounds is directly affected: Racing Club Narbonnais, who are theoretically due to host Tarbes on 27 February, are waiting for the cessation of activity to be made official. If insolvency is confirmed before that date, the match would be cancelled. For Tarbes, the priority now is to save the Association and its affiliation number in the hope of being reborn a level below.
