No decision has yet been reached in the case.

Tadhg Furlong will have to answer to a disciplinary panel. The 33-year-old Leinster tighthead has been cited by the United Rugby Championship over an incident in the 37th minute of Saturday’s 24-18 derby win over Munster at the Aviva Stadium. No decision has been made so far.

What the prop is accused of

According to the URC statement released on Monday, citing commissioner Peter Ferguson has made a complaint about an act of foul play by Furlong against Munster number eight Gavin Coombes. The prop has been cited under Law 9.27: “A player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship including but not limited to grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals.” At a ruck, after a carry from Joe McCarthy, Furlong cleared out Coombes, who complained to referee Andrew Brace just before half-time. The TMO found no conclusive footage during the game and no action was taken on the pitch. Planet Rugby reports that Munster have clearer footage of the incident.

The two head coaches reacted differently. Clayton McMillan said he backed his players “100 per cent”, while Leo Cullen was cautious: “Obviously, once that accusation is made, it becomes a serious matter for the citing commissioner. So my comment is not going to help in any way here. But from what I’ve seen, I can’t see anything,” the Leinster head coach said.

A possible ban with November in view

Details of the hearing are still to be announced. Should the charge be upheld, the length of any ban would depend on the level of seriousness set by the panel. Recent precedents give an idea of the scale: ten weeks for Joe Marler in 2020 and nine weeks for Jan-Hendrik Wessels in October 2025, also cited by Peter Ferguson.

There is an international dimension too. Furlong, named in Andy Farrell’s squad, has more than 85 Ireland caps, 72 of them as a starter, and started all nine Lions Tests on the 2017, 2021 and 2025 tours. Ireland host Argentina on 6 November, Fiji on the 14th and South Africa on the 21st in the Nations Championship. A ban of a few weeks would be enough to rule him out of some or all of those games, with Farrell already without Garry Ringrose, Caelan Doris and Jack Conan.
