What is at stake

A four-year suspension of the Samoa Rugby Union is being discussed. It would run beyond the 2027 World Cup in Australia: if applied, it would rule Manu Samoa out of the tournament.

The case concerns the union’s governance, not what happens on the pitch.

A major Pacific nation

Samoa have played at every World Cup since 1991 and reached the quarter-finals twice, in 1991 and 1995. The country also supplies a large number of players to European and Japanese leagues, several of whom play in the Top 14 and Pro D2.

Its union has been going through recurring financial and institutional difficulties for several years.
