At the final whistle in Aix-en-Provence, the Agen staff spoke of a simple knock on the knee. Ten days later, the diagnosis is more serious.

From a “knock on the knee” to four weeks out

Taniela Matakaiongo went off during the away match at Provence Rugby on 27 August, lost 44-10. Mauricio Reggiardo had then spoken of a simple knock to the knee.

The player actually has an injury to the back of his right knee and is following a strengthening programme of at least four weeks, Sud Ouest reports. He had already missed the home match against Brive.

Starting at number 8 in his last six matches

Matakaiongo is 29. He joined Agen in the summer of 2025 after two full seasons at Chambéry in Nationale: 19 matches with 17 starts and 5 tries in 2023-2024, then 23 matches, 23 starts and 8 tries in 2024-2025.

His first season in Pro D2 followed the same trend: 15 matches, 12 as a starter, 2 tries. He started each of his last six matches wearing the number 8 shirt.

A position where Agen have plenty of cover

The back row is the best-stocked area of the Agen squad, with nine players registered in Pro D2 this season. Matthieu Bonnet and Enzo Serieyssol are among them, both also injured in recent days.

Agen are bottom of Pro D2 without a single point after two rounds and travel to Grenoble on Friday.
