2035 may seem a long way off, but the Argentine rugby federation is already looking ahead. In a statement published on Wednesday, it announced its bid to host that year’s World Cup. No World Cup has ever been played in South America.
The bid is being put together with Sudamérica Rugby (the body that runs rugby union in South America), with the possibility of bringing the federations of Chile, Brazil and Uruguay into the equation.
“The 2035 bid represents a national objective and a large-scale project that goes beyond our borders. Welcoming Alan Gilpin (the president of World Rugby, ed.) to take this technical analysis further is a fundamental step that shows the region is ready. We want a World Cup that reflects the passion and the growth rugby has enjoyed right across our territory », said Argentine federation president Gabriel Travaglini with delight.
