A white shirt marked with the kind of shoulder bands more commonly found in rugby league. That is the design chosen by Nike, kit supplier to Rugby Club Toulonnais, for the shirt the Var players will wear in away matches, revealed on social media on Monday. A design that draws its inspiration from the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, the flagship of the French navy which is regularly stationed in the military port of Toulon.

It was in fact on the deck of the warship itself that Dany Priso, Mathieu Smaili and Antoine Frisch, models for a day, posed in the full new strip they will wear at Montauban, Pau, Clermont and on the season’s other away trips.

As for whether the shirt itself is any good, you only have to read the comments under the posts to see that there really is no accounting for taste.
