Wins snatched at the last breath, fortresses crumbling, shows of strength that look like political manifestos, and always that whiff of uncertainty drifting over the winter pitches. Somewhere between a pitched battle and rugby vaudeville, this round 15 reshuffled the pack without ever fully lifting the veil on the pecking order. Here is the overview.

Bordeaux-Bègles 28 – Stade Français 33

At Chaban-Delams, it was the visitors in pink who set things alight from the off, playing with the aggression of a cat that finds its nap cushion in the wrong place. UBB, for all the ever-seductive threat of their attacking line, ran into a Stade Français side outrageously good at taking their chances. Between flamboyant misses and decisive tackles, Paris managed to swing the argument their way in the money time, snatching a win with a fine smell of resilience about it. A match where every small detail counted.

Perpignan 31 – Montauban 8

The Sang et Or gave the visitors from Montauban no chance whatsoever. From start to finish, Perpignan imposed their total physical superiority, like a cyclist going solo from the first kilometre of the stage. Montauban, shy about going for the line, rarely found any gaps, while Perpignan enjoyed themselves finding space the way you find shells at low tide. A clear scoreline, a complete performance, and USAP confirm their new momentum. Is Montauban’s fate now sealed?

Bayonne 10 – Castres 13

At Jean-Dauger, the Basques thought they could hold up the match in stoppage time and turn a script around as they so often know how to do. But Castres, patient as a chess player, were waiting for their chance. A penalty here, a lineout well taken there, and the men from the Tarn pulled it off again, having been the last side to win at the Aviron a year and a half ago. Few points but plenty of intensity. A war of nerves, literally, for a different ending at Jean-Dauger. The fortress has fallen.

Racing 92 35 – Lyon 34

Oh, what madness! Racing and Lyon served up a genuine thriller, the sort of film nobody leaves before the last second of the credits. Lyon, who often played the patient game themselves, showed real bite, but the Ciel et Blanc eventually found the key to draw level, then to make the break in the closing moments. A festival of tries, counter-attacks and cold sweats, typical of the Top 14 when it decides to let its hair down.

Toulouse 59 – Pau 22

In the big clash of this round 15, Toulouse literally suffocated Pau. And that is putting it mildly. The Rouge et Noir rolled out the flamboyant rugby they have stayed faithful to at home this season, racking up tries the way others collect rare stamps. At Ernest-Wallon, the Toulouse attack looked to be fitted with a flawless internal GPS, finding the running lines with every counter. On the Pau side, despite a few flashes, they were never really able to turn the tide against the local armada. A steamroller that propels Toulouse even higher in the table, with the evening’s victim as runners-up.

Toulon 30 – Montpellier 27

At Mayol, RCT suffered but were smiling at the end. Against Montpellier, the men from the Var showed an iron will mixed with a few flashes of individual genius. Montpellier, as crafty as a fox at the henhouse door, never gave way despite the pressure and even thought they could steal the win. But Toulon, in one final surge, struck at just the right moment, treating their crowd to a dance of joy almost as hot and humid as the atmosphere in the stands.

Clermont 32 – Stade Rochelais 27

This duel flirted with parity throughout, like a set of scales hesitating between two identical weights. Clermont, true to their school of combat, patiently built their platform, while La Rochelle did not give an inch, making Clermont’s task as prickly as a mountain path in the Puy de Dôme. In the end, a small gap but a big lungful of air for Urios’s men, proof that the Top 14 always has mouthwatering duels and tight battles in store.
