Having stated last autumn that he had opted for New Zealand and a career in Super Rugby, Patrick Tuifua (20) surprised everyone on Thursday by officially signing with Rugby Club Toulonnais for the next three seasons, that is until June 2028.
The young back-rower, a native of New Caledonia, had been expected at the Hurricanes, the Wellington-based franchise, to go through pre-season there. “I have decided to stay in New Zealand”, he told us at the time. “I am going to do pre-season with the Hurricanes. I start at the end of November through to the beginning of February. Then, I hope to land a contract and play Super Rugby.” A clear plan… that ultimately came to nothing.
Not retained to play Super Rugby, Tuifua has therefore chosen to come back to France. A choice with heavy consequences on the international front, since he can no longer be considered for selection with the All Blacks. He does, however, remain eligible for France, having already worn the France under-20 jersey at the 2024 Six Nations.
RCT, who had been following him for several months, proved persuasive. With his physical, dynamic profile, Tuifua strengthens an area that will notably lose Selevasio Tolofua (expected at Clermont). He will play alongside Zach Mercer, who will also join the Var club this summer, and whose return to the Top 14 is keenly awaited.
Toulon are therefore continuing to build an ambitious team around young talent. After the announced arrival of Mathis Ferté (21, Brive), the Toulon club confirm their determination to bank on youth and versatility.
