The third instalment of the It’s Rugby holiday workbook, and a return to a playground classic: hangman. Well, almost. There is no gallows here — every mistake builds another piece of the posts, and the word’s fate is settled the way it should be: off the tee. On the menu, the rugby vocabulary every supporter ought to have mastered before the season restarts.

The rules

One rugby word to guess, letter by letter, with a clue to point you in the right direction. Every letter that is not in the word moves the building work along: the grass, the two posts, the crossbar, the uprights, then the ball placed on the tee. On the eighth mistake, the kick goes… wide. Find the word before that and the ball sails between the uprights: converted!

A game runs to five words, played on your computer keyboard or by tapping the letters on screen. Five conversions from five and you join the ranks of the metronomes; below that, we are not judging, but the end-of-game summary is.
